It Takes a Village to Raise an FDA Regulated Package.

As design lead for this project, my involvement consisted of:

Collaboration with marketing and outside agency to establish a refresh and look to the brand. Maintain brand equity in purple package.

Designed to California regulations so that consumers could see the contents of the package. Along with a design refresh, the new structure contained a window so that consumers could visibly see the product.

Once the PDP (Primary Display Panel) was approved, my role was them to make sure all elements met FDA requirements. Fonts, Logos (this included size, boldness and legibility), placement and size of Active Ingredients (also called the Statement of Identity, which has to be a certain ratio to the logo itself), Claims and sizes of Drug Fact Labeling all had to fall within specs mandated by the FDA. Multiple internal departments had to review the artwork, including Legal, Medical, QA, and Regulatory Affairs departments before artwork could be filed with the FDA.

Once artwork was approved on one piece, it was then blown out the rest of the product line – about 60 items (at the time). At this point you may have up to 2 designers and a production team all working at the same time to meet the filing deadlines.

FDA approval takes 6-9 months months, so design ideally would take place at least a year in advance–but seldom do we have the luxury of that time frame because of the expectations of going to market. If approved by the FDA, the artwork is sent to the printer for production.
